Help with Legionella compliance

If you’re responsible for a building that has a hot or cold water system, then you’ll need to have a Legionella risk assessment every two years as part of Health and Safety legislation.

You might need to monitor your water temperatures as part of Legionella compliance to make sure temperatures are within a safe range. Water temperatures can be taken manually or remotely.

Remote, or automated, water temperature monitoring is growing in popularity due to some major advantages. The advantages of automating your water temperature monitoring include reducing human error and saving time and effort.

As well as water temperature monitoring, other actions outlined in Legionella risk assessments might include system cleaning, staff training, water system improvements, and water testing. Working with Legionella compliance experts can give you peace of mind that you're ticking all of the right compliance boxes.

Legionella compliance

How do you know if you’re Legionella compliant?

Legionella compliance always starts with a Legionella risk assessment. A certified assessor will look at the water system and level of risk and use official software to create a list of actions needed to manage the risk. If you don’t have a Legionella risk assessment in place then you are not compliant. If you do not follow the actions outlined in your Legionella risk assessment, then you are also not compliant. If you have a Legionella risk assessment and follow all actions or measures, then you are compliant. Not sure if you’re Legionella compliant? Let us help you.

What do I have to do to be Legionella compliant?

Legionella compliance is an ongoing process. Every two years, you will need a Legionella risk assessment. The Legionella risk assessment will outline any actions or measures needed such as water temperature monitoring and keeping water at safe temperatures to reduce the risk of Legionella bacteria to human health.

Legionella compliance and water temperatures

Legionnaires Disease is caused by a bacteria called Legionella. Legionella are mostly likely to multiply and cause risk to health within a particular temperature range.

What is a safe range for water temperatures?

Legionella bacteria can live at temperatures as low as zero and as high as 60°C. An unsafe temperature range is between 20°C and 45°C. So it’s recommended that cold water is kept below 20°C and hot water should be above 50°C to minimise the risk and rate of Legionella bacteria multiplying. Remote water temperature monitoring makes it easier to monitor water temperatures across large or hard-to-reach water systems, and it saves hours of monitoring and report creation! â€‹

Water temperature monitoring is one type of action that could be outlined as an action on your Legionella risk assessment. It’ll all depend on your building and levels of risk.
